Contemporary Renaissance

In September 1599 in Rome, Beatrice Cenci, a noblewoman from one of the most influential families of the time, was executed for killing her violent father, who had been repeatedly abusing her. The event shocked the Roman community. On the day of the execution, Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi were present at her beheading. The Piccola Compagnia della Magnolia, through a reinterpretation of Shelley, Artaud, and Stendhal, denounces the pervasive evil that is the root of all injustice in society, and criticizes the role of religion as both a foundation and a source of condemnation within a community.
