Paolo Valerio used to be a tennis ace, just like the character he plays, Max, who tackles a crisis in his life just as he has always done, by playing tennis. He concentrates, he thinks, and he struggles. Emotions and obsessions surface—moments of silence alternate with defiant, almost desperate outcries. Every night, nearly a thousand rallies follow one another rhythmically, against a fourth wall of plexiglass, a transparent wall that separates the protagonist’s anger from the audience. The performance is managed like a game, at once technical and lyrical, with a flow of authors’ quotes, including Agassi’s Open and David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest.
