Written in the early 1940s, this family drama is considered one of the cornerstones of American playwriting. The entire story unfolds within the walls of a bourgeois home and over the course of a single night, during which the members of a family accuse each other, torment one another, and push themselves beyond every standard of humanity. It is a journey toward an irredeemable downfall: throughout O’Neill’s work, human lives are nothing but a sum of tenderness and violence, love and contempt, understanding and rejection, of families and their ruin.
