Mario, Bella, Anastasia
Mario Banushi, born in 1998 and an emerging artist of Albanian origin, is the rising star of contemporary Greek theatre. Taverna Miresia is an exploration of loss, family and immigrant identity that starts with his father’s death: the neon sign of a restaurant in a Tirana suburb reveals a family’s history. Now an adult, Banushi is on stage with four performers, travelling from Greece to Albania to meet his family. What can the sign still illuminate? A journey back to the land of his childhood, in which joy and despair would alternate and a meal was the same as a cure; the family table with its now empty chairs; a sequence of connotations, images, fragments of memories and all that was never said for lack of time; a farewell to his father, and at the same time a welcome to adulthood and the existential angst that comes with it.
